He is a Sheriff’s Sheriff – he earned his experience over a distinguished career. Sgt. Mike Cortez boasts nearly three decades of service in law enforcement, with roles that have progressively built his leadership and community engagement skills. Throughout his career, he’s worked hands-on in various capacities, from working in the jail to leading the drug task force in Fostoria to leading community block watch programs. This deep-rooted experience equips him with an intimate understanding of both the challenges and opportunities facing Hancock County.
Mike Cortez was honored at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Columbus for completion of a Certified Law Enforcement Executive training course where he received instructions on ethics, interpersonal skills, strategic planning, risk management, resource allocation, and budgeting.

Mike recognizes and actively seeks solutions for current problems, such as the rise of cybercrimes and the crucial need for community engagement in crime prevention. His forward-thinking attitude is exemplified by his embrace of technology in law enforcement, such as leveraging data points to predict crime patterns and championing the use of body-worn and in-car cameras for officers.

It is not easy to choose a career in law enforcement in these modern times. Mike wants to change that in Hancock County. Mike values the Deputies and employees of the Sheriff’s Office, viewing them as essential to community safety. He pushes for both professional and practical training, aiming for real-world efficiency. Mike wants the Sheriff’s Office to not just be a law enforcement agency but a cornerstone of the community. Mike wants to make being a Corrections Officer or a Deputy a desired and respected career so the county can continue to depend on the cornerstone that the Office of the Sheriff represents.
