Increase K9 Presence | More School Resource Officers | Improve Community Mental Health Awareness
K9 units are some of the most recognized and effective members of our department. They make everyone safer. The Sheriff’s Office currently does not have a single K9 unit and that is unacceptable. Cortez wants to work toward having a K9 on every shift and will be committed to rebuilding the K9 program. K9s are a critical part of the office’s community engagement and should regularly have positive interactions with adults and children in the community. Cortez will continue to improve safety measures in schools, working closely with state leaders to ensure Hancock County receives adequate funding for school safety and facility security. Cortez will aim to grow community mental health awareness to tackle the roots of criminal activity, focusing on improving access to mental health resources and advocating for extended Medicaid coverage for those in need of mental health care.

Utilizing advanced technology, Cortez will enhance the efficiency, safety, and accountability of our law enforcement. This will foster stronger community relationships and provide a more effective means of solving crimes. Engaging actively with the community through digital platforms will keep the community informed about crime trends and prevention strategies. Furthermore, addressing the increasing threat of digital and cybercrimes is a priority. Cortez will boost the office’s investigative capabilities through enhanced training and collaboration with private and public sectors, ensuring victims can recover from such crimes.
